Home Birth Midwives: New York Area

Know the difference between a midwife and a doula.

A midwife provides prenatal care, delivery of the baby, care of the mother post-partum and newborn care. The midwife is responsible for the safety of mother and baby. Some kinds of midwives also provide family planning, annual exams, and other kinds of well-woman gynecology.

What’s a Midwife?

Certified Professional Midwives (CPM) or Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) care for healthy pregnant women giving birth at home or in a freestanding birth center. They are independent practitioners providing complete continuity of care for the childbearing year, including prenatal, labor, birth, postpartum, and newborn care. They are not doctors. Nurse-midwives have a combination of training in modern obstetrics and gynecology, midwifery (the traditional birthing practice), and nursing. Most nurse-midwives in the United States practice within a hospital system, but some do attend births out of hospital settings. Nurse-midwives collaborate with physicians and consult on any variations from normal.
